Feeding the Birds

Our Backyard Bird Treats

We started making bird feeders last week when it was so cold and snowy. We already have two feeders that attract a huge variety and amount of birds to our yard. But we thought it would be fun to make some treats. Online I found popcorn hearts. I made the popcorn and let it sit out to get stale.

Ethan and Paige then threaded popcorn onto florist wire which we then shaped into hearts.
Right out of the February issue of Family Fun we made the birdseed biscuits. Mix 3/4 cup of seed and 1 Tablespoon flour and 2 Tablespoons water. Put into greased cookie cutters on top of foil on a cookie sheet. Pack seed mixture into the cutter. Insert a straw for a hanging hole, bake at 170 until hard, mine took 45 minutes. I may have over baked as they were a little crumbly but we were still able to hang them. They were the first to go off the tree!

Lindy was the cutter of straw, wire, yarn, and then popcorn!

Our finished product!

We hung these on the Japanese Maple tree right outside the bay window where our kitchen table sits. We can see the birds close up while they snack.

The oranges were another idea I found online. Birds like dried fruit so we sliced an orange and let it sit out a couple of days, poked holes in the center, and hung them on branches.

I love your bird feeders! What a nice idea! Our poor birds have been trying to peck away at ours, but I think the seed is frozen....grrr
