Museum Day - Egyptian Canopic Jars

Paige holding her Duck Canopic Jar

We all went to 1st Saturday last weekend while Kyle and Bill were at Kyle's karate test. Erin was very excited to go and do a project. Lindy, Paige, and Ethan have no problem tagging along especially when they find out that Grommy is meeting us and we are staying for lunch!

The museum just opened the Egyptian exhibit. We took a quick trip through for the kids to find the items on their paper. It looks fabulous and we are looking forward to going through it a couple more times before it leaves.

The project was working with clay and creating a canopic jar. Ethan and Kyle studied Egyptian history last year so Ethan remembered that these were for storing the organs before burial. I don't think Lindy and Paige were quite are of this concept. They happily created their jars to look like a duck and a ladybug (I'm sure there must be some special meaning in Egyptian afterlife for these animals/insects!) Erin and Grommy had a great time working together, or rather Erin loved having Grommy create whatever animal she thought of.

The kids learned how to roll the clay into a ball and make their hands act as a pottery wheel to create the opening.

Ethan made a really great snake and used gems to create scales.

There are awesome Egyptian masks to try on and pose in front of the pyramids. They were a hit with the kids.

We had a great time visiting the museum, thanks for going with us Grommy.

I Really am Grateful

My favorite picture-
Grandma with Kyle June 2000
The last 7 days have been a bit of a roller coaster here.

My grandma died last week. I know that she is in a better place but as a friend from church said - it does not matter how old you are or how old your grandma is, you have lost a very important person in your life. How true! I have received many cards of sympathy this past week which mean so much. One in particular really speaks the truth of how I feel.

" A grandmother is the warmth you'll always remember, the caring you'll always treasure..the memories that will live in your heart forever." (Thank you Laura!)

There have been many times this past week when I have had little heart tugs. Addressing my Christmas cards and getting to her address in my book, getting our annual calendar ready to send out to family except for her, and finishing up our advent calender.

I am so very grateful that I had such a wonderful grandma, who has given me lifelong memories that I will never forget and pass to my children.

I am so grateful for our health, even though my sweet Paige had a horrible stomach bug that left her miserable for days. We are so lucky to have children with no medical problems.

I am so grateful for our home, even though my hot water tank broke and leaked water all over the floor last night, threatening the new carpet in the basement. We were lucky to get someone here today to replace it. We have a warm home with hot water!

I am grateful for all of my family, even though some are far away. This blog allows them to feel a part of our life. I love that they all love my children so much.
I am so grateful that in the midst of everything this week, we had fun and memorable moments for the holiday season.

the Christmas table.

Even though we have had grief, sickness, and frustration this week, I still feel like the luckiest person. I just have to look around my house and see happy smiling faces and hearing their chatter to know this!

It Pays to be Petite! Goldilocks returns...

Poor mom! She had a cold and we worked her hard! Running to find tights for Lindy to wear to the piano recital, running around our house setting out cookies, making punch, greeting guests, and being social. As the afternoon wore on her cough got worse and she crashed. Gretchen told her she was not to lay down and cough on a child's bed and pillow (they can be washed!). So she found Erin's old toddler bed which is in the "American Girl" room (aka Molly and Samantha's room). I didn't even see her the first time I went in! She made it through the recital and went to the doctor Monday. She's on antibiotics for a sinus infection and I am sure that nap in the little bed helped! Thanks for all of your help mom!
