Book Club - Week 3, Commander Toad and the Space Pirates

Week 3's selection

Jessie chose to do the Pegasus constellation.

What a fun week we had in Book Club! Commander Toad and the Space Pirates was a funny story about toads in space being attacked by pirates. The comical escapades were secretly enlisted by Commander Toad to keep his crew from being bored which they were complaining of. It worked! They were on their toes trying to keep the pirates from destroying their ship. The class enjoyed the book especially the boys!

Since we traveled to space in the book we had some space projects to do. Taking a large piece of black construction paper that was our sky, students drew constellations in chalk. They then used toothpicks to punch holes in the paper so that they could hold it up to a window and look at their constellation. Stars were added to brighten up their night sky. They turned out great!

Lindy created her own constellation of a flower garden.

We used books with constellations for ideas but students had the freedom to create their own.

Anna also did the Pegasus.

Colin did the Crow constellation. Here he is checking out his holes to see the light come through.

Poking holes with toothpicks.

This artist shaded with her chalk to add a background. It turned out really neat!

A sneak peak of our finished products, many kids wanted their piece saved for showcase.

Going to space required a space like snack and what better than dried fruit! Apples, cranberries, bananas, and pineapple were snacked on while we answered questions.

The kids really got into the questions this week. They called on each other to answer and kept the conversation flowing.

I love this picture! Many kids bring their books to class and look for pictures and sections of the book to help answer their questions. It really shows their involvement and enjoyment of reading which is what this class is all about.
