A Trip to the Farm for Maple Sugaring!

A cold but happy family!

I am so behind on updating here (sorry UB!) but Bill has been working about 80 hours a week and with co-op and teaching well I don't have to say much more! Last Saturday we went over to Slate Run Farm to see the Maple Syrup activities. Bill and I had been wanting to go for years so we were excited to take the kids and spend some time together as a family instead of passing each other on 256 driving kids somewhere in the evening.

It was cold. Very cold. But that did not dampen the kids enthusiasm for having Dad to themselves. We pretty much had the farm to ourselves as well, there were only a few people there. We had our own drilling demonstration, saw the sap being boiled down, and took a trip through the farm house.

When we first arrived we only saw one drop hit this bucket. When we walked by on the way out there was a steady stream of drips which the kids thought was cool.

Erin loved watching drip, drip, drip.

This was what the kids found so fascinating, that you need 40 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup!

Boiling down the sap. This was full when we arrived as they had just started boiling the sap. The guide said that there would only be about 2 inches of sap in the bottom when it was done.

Erin watched everything and was very excited to try drilling.

Lindy makes a hole!

Erin drilling with a little help from Daddy.

Kyle was able to make a hole worth tapping.
Tap installed!

Ready for some sap. Too bad this was a demo tree trunk!

A quick trip inside the farmhouse for some treats! We all love real maple syrup it does not stay in our house very long so Paige was most excited to have her own sample.
Lindy enjoying Maple Gingerbread.
Maple sugar candy.
After snacking we stayed inside to warm up and Kyle found the marble roll.
After a quick demo from Bill all the kids had this little guy dancing!
The kids all tried the stilts before we left, some were more successful than others. Kyle was one of them.
.
Erin would not give up and everyone got the chance to help her!

We all had a great day! The kids really liked seeing everything we had read and learned about the syrup process come to life.

Such neat things your family does, and everybody always seems to have a smile on their faces, and seems to be happy! Looks like a lot of fun, too!

UB there are so many smiles down at the Miller household. Right now it is fun to see Lindy and Paige's because their smiles are constantly changing.... Paige have those teeth come out yet???

You guys get to spend such fun times with your dad and then at the same time you are teaching us something new! I never new it took so much sap to make maple syrup.... I just love having pancakes with my maple syrup!!
