Book Club - Aliki, Week 1

Welcome to Book Club! We had a great first week. We have a large class but a great group of kids who all like to read. Since this was our first week we had lots of things to cover in addition to our author of the week, Aliki. Go here for more information on Aliki.
To introduce ourselves we played the toilet paper game. We passed a roll of toilet paper around and everyone was to tear off a few squares. Then we explained the game! For each square of toilet paper you had, you were to tell the class something about yourself. We learned many interesting things about our students. Many have pets and one student has 11 pets! Two students have 5 and 6 siblings. Many people like to draw and read. Looks like we may have future author and illustrators among us.
We then went over the rules of the Book Club. Every club needs it rules! I am happy to say that the group took them seriously and put them in place for our first question discussion. We talked about Aliki and her Greek heritage, listened to Greek music, and had a Greek snack.
Aliki has written many books both fiction and non fiction. We shared with the class the ones we had read. Digging up Dinosaurs was a popular choice, as was At the Zoo, and We are Best Friends.
Since we all read a different book this week by Aliki, we did some general questions. We were not able to get through them all but we will try to do a few more this week. We learned what an autobiography and biography were. The setting of the book is where the story is taking place. The setting for our Book Club was a classroom. Dialogue is when people in the story are talking to each other. See if we can tell you about the setting in the book for next week and if we can identify the dialogue.

Next weeks book, The Rag Coat by Lauren Mills.
Happy Reading!

The class put their rules in place with our first round of questions. Colin spoke clearly, talked to the group, and projected his voice so that the other side of the room could hear him. Great job!
