A Fine Soldier

This whole project got started from Mr Walsh. He told the story of a man that he had to leave behind in battle calling for help. Kyle was so moved by this story that while Frank was crying while telling it Kyle was patting his hand in comfort. When we came home Kyle wrote the story down not wanting to forget anything. The stories are still being collected. Each one is just as important and priceless to our country's history.

Frank passed away yesterday. Please remember the veterans of our country.

Owch!

Ethan with four less teeth trying to get comfortable. It took awhile but finally after a big dose of Motrin, a pillow, and dual ice packs for each cheek we were successful in getting the pain to subside. Getting teeth extracted is not a picnic but he was a trooper! The diet was the only positive experience! Who doesn't like pudding for breakfast for 2 days!

Helping Those in Need

The Juniors had there 5th annual Food Drive for the Pickerington Food Pantry earlier this month. This year they had the new Daisies join them. Each junior patrol was assigned two Daisies to help and teach about the importance of helping others and the community.
What fun they had in the process! We collected from many houses. The girls unloaded all the food and checked for expiration dates. When done we had 270 items to donate! Our largest amount ever collected. The people at the food pantry could not believe how we kept bringing bag after bag in! What a great feeling for the girls to see that with just a little work one afternoon they can make a huge difference to many, many people.
When we finished it was time for a well earned snack! October 31st is our Girls Scout founder, Juliette Low's birthday. In honor of her birthday we had a special cake made by Mackenzie's mom. Complete with all the badges, the sash troop number was 1912, the year Juliette founded Girl Scouts.
Great job Juniors and Daisies!

Quotes from Lindy

While sitting at the desk doing Math together, Lindy sees the Rumpke trash bill.
Lindy -"What is that for?"
Me - "The trash bill. You know we pay to have all our trash picked up."
Lindy - "Wow. Life sure isn't cheap!"

While bidding on ebay for her next reading program this afternoon.

Lindy - "There is only one minute left! You have to bid now!"
Me - "I know, relax I know people bid the last 10 seconds it will be OK."
Lindy - "Hurry up! Bid now! I just know you will win it."
Me - "You have a  good feeling do you?"
Lindy - "Yep"
Lindy - "You won! I knew it"
Lindy - 2 minutes later "Wow, that was really intense!"

Such is the discovery of life from girl world. I am sure that she could find a much better thing to buy than trash service. She was very happy to be getting her next reading level though!

Gretchen's "mini me's"

For the last couple of years for all the girl's birthday's, Aunt Gretchen takes them out shopping for their gift. It usually is Michael's or Joann's for a fun craft project. They LOVE doing this! Just riding in Aunt Gretch's car is fun (not sure why since there is dog hair and barn mud everywhere but that must be the charm). Saturday was THE day and my were they excited. Not only were they going to shop but they were also going to Bob "Ebans" (Erin's choice obviously) and to the barn. They love to go to the barn and ride but this time there was a treat, a new pony named Bubbles.
Barn fun includes raking hay, feeding horses, grooming horses, and general horse maintenance. All of which they eagerly do. Then the fun starts and everyone gets to ride. Bubbles is very cute and just the right size for the girls. Erin was especially excited because she could reach the top of Bubbles while brushing him.
They came tired and happy filled with stories and lots of craft goodies they worked on all night. Throw in the new Tinkerbell movie and a sleepover with mom and they had a fabulous girl weekend.
Thank you Aunt Gretch for a special day!

Newport Aquarium

Field Trip to Newport Aquarium on Friday was a hit! The kids all had a great time. Here are some pictures of their favorites.

I loved this display on how the Loggerhead Turtles nest to lay their eggs. When we go to Folly Beach there are roped off areas where nesting sites are located. It was neat for the kids to see what is going on in the nest underground.

Gators

Shark petting was most of my kids favorites.

My personal favorite were the Jellyfish and the little map holder below! She was glued to her map the entire time. I was wondering if she would remember seeing anything but she did, and remembers her route too!

Erin's little happy dance! She had a great day.

Transplant Trick or Treat

Sometimes in the midst of our everyday busy lives we are drawn to do something. I have felt that way about volunteering with Lifeline. Tonight was no different. I had been planning to attend a meeting at Lifeline this evening for weeks. Of course when it came down to getting there that was a different story! Evenings are hectic but Bill and I had things arranged, he would get everyone to their activities so that I could make the meeting. I got a late start, the traffic was horrible, I was late (noticeably late!), like I almost turned around to go home because I thought I would not get through the traffic. But something kept me going.
When I arrived at the meeting, Terri shared some news with me. Jonah's preschool teacher had just had a heart transplant. She had just visited her in the hospital earlier in the day. What are the odds that one of Jonah's former teachers would need a heart transplant just like he had? Terri told me that she had let Kim, Jonah's mom, know about this connection.
After the meeting concluded, some of the people from the group were going to go visit some of the new transplant patients in the hospital. Reverse trick or treating, dress up and pass out candy to the patients. They asked me to join them and gave me a bag of candy. How could I say no. Then Terri told me that Kim was going to try to join the group so that she could visit Jonah's former teacher. Well that sealed the deal for me, if Kim was going I was going.
When I got down to my car Kim was just arriving armed with witches hats to dress up in. Off we all go, candy and costumes to spread some Halloween cheer. We may have spread cheer, but I think we all received our share of joy. Patients so happy to see people who have had success with their transplants. Family members of donors who helped others receive the gift of life. Heart warming stories of friends donating kidneys to childhood friends, a son donating a kidney to his mom, the stories go on.
We work our way to the heart unit to see Jonah's preschool teacher. I was so touched that Kim wanted to go visit her but I also knew it would be hard for her too. But never underestimate that woman! She is an amazingly strong woman even when I am sure she does not feel very strong.
While we were waiting for Jonah's teacher to get settled in her room we waited in the hall outside her room, chatting amongst ourselves. Kim had been wearing a jacket for the last couple of weeks with a button of Jonah from soccer when he was little. She was carrying it over her arm while we walked through the hospital. While we were standing there talking a loud clang came from the floor. The button had fallen off the jacket and landed by our feet. The button that had been on the jacket for weeks, was now sitting on the floor, outside the room of the preschool teacher. Kim and I both start crying. Jonah has a special way of getting people's attention, especially his mom's! If ever there was a sign of his presence it was right then. None of us could believe it had even happened. All night we walked though that hospital, visiting many patients, and at that moment the button falls off. Once we stopped crying we had to laugh - it was just so Jonah! His spirit was with us all night.
Jonah's teacher was so happy to see everyone especially Kim. She is doing great! And with an angel like Jonah to watch out for her I am sure she will have a speedy recovery. I know that I will always follow my heart to where it leads me whether it be to a meeting or somewhere else. Because God works in many ways to make sure you are where you are supposed to be doing what you are supposed to do.

My Sweet Girl

She can be so grown up sometimes but she is still my little baby girl. Wanting to be a "big girl" she took one of Paige's books to the deck to "read". Sat out there for quite awhile and finally I had to do a photo shoot. She was a pretty good sport though!  She very carefully planned her wardrobe when packing and this dress for her her day out in Charleston. She wanted to wear it out to lunch. Many people commented on her cute dress so she was pretty proud.
So glad that despite her need to be with her older sisters and their friends she still likes to hang out with her mommy!
